Recap

Cubs 5, Pirates 1: Paul Maholm pitched eight strong innings to win his fifth straight game and David DeJesus broke a tie with a two-run double in the fifth as visiting Chicago defeated Pittsburgh for the second consecutive night.

After the game, the Pirates confirmed that they acquired Wandy Rodriguez from Houston for fellow left-handers Rudy Owens and Colton Cain as well as outfielder Robbie Grossman.

Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Starlin Castro delivered a solo shot in the first for the Cubs, who have allowed only seven hits in the first two games of the series.

A prime candidate to be dealt prior to the July 31 trade deadline, Maholm (9-6) allowed one run, four hits and struck out seven. He didn’t allow a hit until Garrett Jones’ solo home run with two outs in the fourth inning and retired nine in a row before yielding a pair of singles with two outs in the seventh. Maholm has a 0.94 ERA in his last six outings.

James McDonald (10-4) had his five-game winning streak snapped. He allowed five runs, five hits and struck out six in six innings as the Pirates lost consecutive games for the first time since May 22-23.

McDonald walked three – all in the fifth inning, including one to Maholm to load the bases with two outs. DeJesus followed by ripping a long double down the right-field line on a 0-1 pitch.

The Pirates threatened when Neil Walker doubled and Andrew McCutchen walked to lead off the ninth inning before Carlos Marmol retired Jones on a fly out and induced Casey McGehee to hit into a double play.

GAME NOTEBOOK: McDonald has walked 17 in his last five starts after issuing only 26 free passes in his first 15 outings. … Maholm has recorded 27 strikeouts against only five walks in his last six starts. … Jones was hitless in his first 12 at-bats against left-handers this season, but is 6-for-13 since. … Pittsburgh had won five straight prior to Chicago coming to town. … The Pirates still own the best home record in baseball at 32-16 and are 21-6 in their last 27 at PNC Park.
