Recap

Cubs 2, Pirates 0: Jeff Samardzija gave up just one hit in eight innings, outdueling Erik Bedard as visiting Chicago halted Pittsburgh’s five-game winning streak.

Samardzija (7-8), who struck out five, allowed just two baserunners all night. He worked around a two-out walk to Andrew McCutchen in the first inning and surrendered an infield single to McCutchen in the fourth. The Pittsburgh outfielder was promptly caught trying to steal second base.

Samardzija was lifted after 99 pitches for Carlos Marmol, who gave up a leadoff infield single to pinch hitter Josh Harrison in the ninth but retired the next three hitters for his 12th save.

Bedard (5-11) yielded just two hits in his seven innings but one of them produced the decisive run. Starlin Castro led off the top of the fourth inning with a walk, coming in to score the game’s first run when Alfonso Soriano stroked the first of his two RBI doubles to center field.

Bedard walked two and finished with 11 strikeouts, tying a season high. He threw 113 pitches.

The Cubs, who were outscored by a 23-1 count in three weekend losses at St. Louis, added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning when Castro led off with a base hit and scored on another RBI double by Soriano.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Pittsburgh hasn’t won six in a row since May 2008. ... Samardzija, who pitched through the eighth inning for just the second time in his 25 career starts, is 6-2 this season when pitching seven innings or more. ... Cubs 3B Joe Mather went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts on his 30th birthday.
