Diamondbacks 5, Cubs 1: Rookie Wade Miley scattered three hits over eight solid innings and Justin Upton continued his sizzling homestand by driving in three runs as Arizona capped its first three-game sweep of Chicago in nearly 11 years.
Jason Kubel homered for the third time in four contests and Aaron Hill added an RBI single for the Diamondbacks, who secured their first sweep of the Cubs since Aug. 17-19, 2001.
Miley (9-3) yielded Darwin Barney's leadoff single in the third inning before retiring the next 14 batters. Alfonso Soriano snapped that stretch with his 14th homer in the seventh, but Kubel answered with his 10th blast leading off the bottom of the frame.
Upton opened the scoring in the first inning by depositing a curveball from Matt Garza (3-6) into shallow left-center field for an RBI single. Upton then capped the scoring with a two-run single in the eighth for his 10th and 11th RBIs of the six-game homestand.
Hill extended his home hitting streak to 16 games with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning. After ripping a two-out triple, Gerardo Parra scored for the second time in the contest.
J.J. Putz struck out a pair in the ninth inning to help hand the Cubs their fourth straight loss and 28th in 37 games.
Garza suffered his fifth loss in six games after permitting three runs on five hits in seven innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona, which scored 51 runs on its six-game homestand, will travel to the Peach State to face Atlanta in a three-game set. ...
