Recap

Cubs 3, Cardinals 2: Joe Mather drove in two runs with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth as host Chicago stole a win from rival St. Louis.

After 7 2/3 strong innings from Jaime Garcia, the Cardinals went to the bullpen. Mitchell Boggs recorded the final out of the eighth but Jason Motte was not as successful in the ninth.

Motte (1-1) struck out Alfonso Soriano leading off the frame but lost Bryan LaHair on a 12-pitch walk. Geovany Soto walked on four pitches and both runners moved up on a groundout before Mather took a 2-2 slider into center field to plate two runs.

Rafael Dolis (1-1) worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings to grab the win.

Garcia needed only 85 pitches to get through 7 2/3 innings, yielding one run on six hits while walking one and striking out four.

The Cubs got on the board in the first inning before Garcia was able to settle in, taking advantage of a pair of singles and a wild pitch to get a run home on Soriano’s sacrifice fly.

Matt Garza kept St. Louis off the board until the fourth, when Carlos Beltran’s RBI groundout knotted it at 1 and Yadier Molina put the Cardinals ahead with a sacrifice fly.

Garza ended up going seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits with striking out five and walking three.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cardinals CF Jon Jay had an MRI in St. Louis on Monday that showed no structural damage. He is day-to-day. … Cubs RH Kerry Wood (shoulder) is expected to start a throwing program soon and may make some rehab appearances in the minor leagues. … Soriano is 1-for-23 over his last six games.
