Twins 7, Athletics 2:
Josh Willingham, Darin Mastroianni and Joe Mauer each drove in two runs in support of Brian Duensing as visiting Minnesota cooled off Oakland.

Mastroianni scored two runs and Willingham and Mauer each finished with three hits for the Twins, who snapped a five-game skid and won for only the second time in their last 11 games. Pedro Florimon also had three hits.

Brandon McCarthy (6-5) suffered the brunt of the damage for the Athletics, allowing six runs on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings to remain winless in three starts since coming off the disabled list. The right-hander’s struggles helped end Oakland’s four-game winning streak and drop the team one-half game behind the Baltimore Orioles for the second wild card spot in the American League.

The Twins got to McCarthy for two runs in each of the first two innings. Willingham started the onslaught with an RBI double in the first and McCarthy walked Trevor Plouffe with the bases loaded to force in a second run. Mastroianni and Willingham each recorded RBI singles in the second.

The Athletics tried to crawl back into it with runs in the second and third but Mauer made it a 6-2 gap with a two-run single in the fourth.

Duensing (3-8) struck out seven and walked one while allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings. The left-hander had surrendered a total of 29 hits in 19 innings while going winless in his previous three starts.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Athletics acquired SS Stephen Drew from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for a minor league shortstop late Monday night. … The Twins outrighted RHP Nick Blackburn to Triple-A Rochester. Blackburn had posted a 7.39 ERA in 19 appearances for Minnesota. … Twins CF Denard Span (neck) had an MRI on Monday and sat out his seventh straight game. … The Athletics reinstated LHP Brett Anderson (Tommy John surgery) from the DL. He will make his season debut Tuesday. RHP Dan Straily was optioned to Triple A.
