Recap

Royals 4, Angels 1: Lorenzo Cain smacked a two-run homer and rookie Will Smith allowed one run in a career-high seven innings to lift host Kansas City.

Alex Gordon had three hits with an RBI and run scored to help the Royals win for just the sixth time in 22 games and drop Los Angeles into a tie with Oakland for second place in the AL West.

Smith (2-3), who was acquired from the Angels in July 2010, gave up a run on two hits in the first inning before holding them hitless for the next six innings. He walked four and struck out four.

Greg Holland pitched a scoreless eighth and Jonathan Broxton gave up a pair of hits in the ninth before securing his 23rd save.

Angels rookie right-hander Garrett Richards (3-2) lasted only five innings, allowing four runs on five hits and throwing 96 pitches.

The Royals jumped on Richards for two runs in the first on Gordon's double and Cain's one-out blast to left field.

Mark Trumbo's RBI single in the bottom of the inning cut the deficit in half, but Kansas City added two more runs in the second on Gordon's RBI single and Alcides Escobar's groundout.

Angels rookie Mike Trout, the AL batting leader, went 0-for-3 and had his 12-game hitting streak and team-record 15-game run-scoring streak snapped.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Richards has surrendered 27 runs in eight starts, with 20 of them coming in the first two innings. ... Cain has three homers and 13 RBIs since he was recalled from the minors after the All-Star break. ... Angels OF Vernon Wells homered Tuesday night at Triple-A Salt Lake City and is 8-for-18 in five games of his rehab stint. He has been out since May 20 with a torn ligament in his right thumb. ... Gordon has 11 multi-hit games in July and seven in his last 10 games. ... Trout went hitless for only the 16th time in 75 starts.
