Recap

Pirates 3, Royals 2: Andrew McCutchen homered and drove in all three runs and A.J. Burnett pitched into the eighth to help Pittsburgh finish off a three-game sweep of visiting Kansas City.

The Pirates, now tied for first Cincinnati in the National League Central after the Reds' loss to Detroit on Sunday night, have won 12 of 15 overall and 11 of 14 at PNC Park. The Royals have lost four straight and six of eight.

McCutchen opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first and added a two-run homer in the third against Royals starter Bruce Chen.

Chen (5-6) allowed three runs on four hits in five innings in losing for just the second time in seven starts.

Burnett (6-2) didn't allow a hit until Alex Gordon's one-out single in the sixth and he kept the Royals off the board until the seventh. He allowed two runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings, winning his fifth straight start.

The Royals loaded the bases in the eighth after pulling within 3-2 earlier in the inning. But Juan Cruz struck out Mitch Maier on a called third strike to end the inning.

With closer Joel Hanrahan getting the day off, Jason Grilli pitched the ninth and allowed the tying run to reach scoring position before striking out Alex Gordon and Johnny Giavotella for his first save of the season and fourth of his career.
