Recap

Athletics 9, Royals 3:
Brandon McCarthy pitched six solid innings and received some rare run support as visiting Oakland snapped a nine-game losing streak.

McCarthy (4-3), who threw just 71 pitches, scattered eight hits and issued two walks. The Athletics turned three double plays behind him, including one that saw right fielder Collin Cowgill throw out Jeff Francoeur at home plate to end the sixth inning.

The visitors, who had not scored since Tuesday, took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Yoenis Cespedes scored on a wild pitch and then broke the game open with four runs in the fifth. Josh Reddick delivered a two-run triple and scored on a base hit by Cespedes before Kila Ka’aihue’s RBI double made it 6-1.

Cowgill’s RBI groundout in the first ended a drought of 19 consecutive scoreless innings for the Athletics. Francoeur’s run-scoring single in the bottom of the inning tied it at 1-1.

Eric Hosmer had an RBI double in the sixth inning for the Royals. Yuniesky Betancourt added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Oakland's Adam Rosales singled home two runs in the eighth inning after replacing the injured Jemile Weeks at second base. The Athletics added another run later in the inning on Kansas City's third error of the day.

Luke Hochevar (3-6) gave up six runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings, walking three and striking out three.
