Recap

Athletics 12, Tigers 4:
George Kottaras capped a four-run sixth inning with a two-run triple and Seth Smith added a bases-clearing double in the ninth as visiting Oakland came from behind to avoid a three-game sweep at Detroit.

Smith chipped in a solo homer and Josh Donaldson drove in two runs and scored twice for the Athletics, who moved 4 1/2 games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels for the second wild-card spot in the American League. Oakland is tied with the idle Baltimore Orioles (85-64) for the top wild-card slot.

Miguel Cabrera went 1-for-4 and scored a run for the Tigers, who remained two games behind Chicago in the AL Central. The White Sox dropped a 4-3 decision in Kansas City.

The A’s were down 3-2 before getting to Anibal Sanchez (3-6) in the sixth. Yoenis Cespedes started the rally with a one-out single and scored the tying run on an error before Donaldson’s two-out single gave Oakland the lead. Kottaras greeted left-hander Phil Coke by sending a drive to center that Austin Jackson misplayed, resulting in the two-run triple.

Andy Dirks got a run back with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth, but the Oakland's bullpen shut down Detroit the rest of the way. Pat Neshek (2-1) got the win in relief of starter Tommy Milone, and the Tigers put it away in a six-run ninth, highlighted by Smith’s three-run double.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Sanchez was charged with six runs (five earned) on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He had posted a 1.89 ERA over his previous five starts. … Tigers C Alex Avila (concussion) was medically cleared to play but got another day off as Gerald Laird took the start. … Oakland continues its brutal 10-game road trip with a three-game series at the New York Yankees starting Friday while Detroit hosts Minnesota.
