Angels 3, Tigers 2: Mike Trout and Alberto Callaspo homered and Zack Greinke pitched seven strong innings as host Los Angeles won its sixth straight contest.

Trout led off the Angels’ first with a homer for the fourth time, setting a new club record as Los Angeles won for the 11th time in 12 games to move six games behind the first-place Texas Rangers in the American League West.

Detroit has lost five of six games and remains two games behind the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.

Greinke (5-2) allowed two runs and five hits. He struck out seven and walked one while improving to 13-6 all-time against the Tigers.

Ernesto Frieri recorded the final four outs for his 18th save in 20 opportunities. Callaspo fumbled a two-out grounder in the ninth for an error to give the Tigers two runners on base. Frieri responded by inducing Jhonny Peralta to bounce out to Callaspo to end it.

Trout got the Angels going with his 27th homer of the season. Erick Aybar singled in the second prior to Callaspo hitting a two-run shot to right off Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez (2-5) to give the Angels a 3-0 advantage.

Andy Dirks homered in the fourth to get Detroit on the board, and Brennan Boesch stroked a two-out double in the seventh to pull the Tigers within a run.

Sanchez allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked none.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Brian Downing (1982) and Tony Phillips (1995) shared the former Angels’ mark of three homers in a season from the leadoff spot. … Detroit star Miguel Cabrera was 1-for-9 with zero RBIs in the series … Los Angeles INF Maicer Izturis missed the game with back tightness. … The Tigers have scored two runs or less in each of their last seven losses.
