Recap

Angels 2, Tigers 1: Zack Greinke pitched 7 2/3 innings in his best performance as an Angel and Howie Kendrick broke a scoreless tie with a two-run double in the sixth as visiting Los Angeles prevailed in a matchup of American League playoff contenders.

Greinke (2-2), who left after allowing Miguel Cabrera's homer with two outs in the eighth, yielded five hits, walked two and struck out five.

Maicer Izturis had three hits while Kendrick (two doubles) and Chris Iannetta had a pair apiece for the Angels, who remain 2 1/2 games out of the final wild-card spot in the American League.

Cabrera had two hits for Detroit, which started 1 1/2 games behind Chicago in the AL Central and fell one game behind Oakland for the last wild-card position.

Rick Porcello (9-9) lost his third straight start. He allowed two runs, seven hits and struck out six in six innings.

Porcello appeared to be out of the sixth inning, but the Angels' Torii Hunter forced second baseman Omar Infante's wide throw to first while breaking up the double-play attempt. Kendrick followed and ripped an 0-2 pitch into the left-center field gap to score Izturis and Hunter.

Greinke retired 11 in a row before Cabrera doubled to left with two outs in the sixth. Greinke, though, caught Prince Fielder looking at a 3-2 fastball on the outside corner to end the threat.

The Tigers had two on with two outs in the seventh, but Greinke struck out pinch hitter Andy Dirks with a 3-2 fastball.

The Angels' Scott Downs and Garrett Richards got two outs apiece, with the latter earning his first career save by throwing seven pitches - six for strikes.
