Recap

Tigers 8, Angels 6: Brennan Boesch capped a seventh-inning rally with a two-run homer as host Detroit edged Los Angeles.

Boesch's high blast into the right-field seats off Angels reliever LaTroy Hawkins (2-2) broke a 5-5 tie and sent the Tigers to their eighth victory in the last nine games. The loss dropped Los Angeles to 1-3 on its seven-game road trip.

Octavio Dotel (3-2) worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief while Jose Valverde recorded the final three outs for his 17th save. Albert Pujols put a scare into the Tigers, coming up as the potential tying run but flying out to deep center field to end the game.

Hawkins absorbed the loss after surrendering his first home run of 2012. The 39-year-old right-hander had thrown 21 2/3 innings without allowing a homer.

Torii Hunter made a strong return from a nagging groin injury, belting a two-run double in the fifth inning that helped the Angels build a 5-2 advantage. Run-scoring singles from Prince Fielder and Delmon Young in the bottom half of the frame made it a one-run game, and Young added a sacrifice fly in the seventh that tied the score and set the stage for Boesch's heroics.

Angels starter Ervin Santana allowed four runs - two earned - on eight hits over six innings and remains winless since June 16. Detroit counterpart Rick Porcello was charged with five runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 frames.

Hunter finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs while the Angels' Mark Trumbo added a solo homer, giving him five in his last seven games and 25 on the season.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Pujols and Fielder squared off for the first time as American League foes. Pujols left the St. Louis Cardinals in the off-season to sign a 10-year, $240-million deal with Los Angeles, while Fielder bolted Milwaukee for a nine-year, $219-million pact with the Tigers. ... Detroit OF Quintin Berry swiped two bases, giving him 14 on the season without being caught. ... Trumbo has 15 home runs and 36 RBIs in his last 38 games dating back to the beginning of June.
