Tigers 4, Pirates 3: Max Scherzer struck out a league-high 15 batters over seven strong innings and Detroit held on in an interleague series rubber match.

Scherzer (3-3), who allowed just four hits, struck out the side in the fourth and fifth innings. All 15 of his victims went down swinging.

Octavio Dotel and Phil Coke worked around a pair of baserunners in the eighth, and Joaquin Benoit allowed a run on a Rod Barajas sacrifice fly in the ninth but held on to record his first save of the season.

The Pirates took a 2-1 lead on solo homers by Barajas and Neil Walker, but the Tigers finally gave Scherzer the upper hand with three runs in the seventh inning. Delmon Young’s RBI single tied the game, and Alex Avila delivered a two-run single against Pittsburgh reliever Tony Watson.

Pirates starter Kevin Correia (1-5) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on four hits in six-plus innings, striking out two without a walk.

Jhonny Peralta hit a solo homer in the fifth for Detroit’s first run of the day. The Tigers finished with just five hits.

: Scherzer’s 15 strikeouts were one short of the club record set by Mickey Lolich in 1969. ... Detroit had 41 strikeouts on the weekend, a franchise record for a three-game series. ... Pittsburgh 3B Pedro Alvarez, who was 0-for-9 with eight strikeouts over the weekend, is 5-for-47 with 24 strikeouts since May 5. ... Tigers closer Jose Valverde (back) was unavailable Sunday.
