Mariners 2, Tigers 1: Jason Vargas pitched eight solid innings and John Jaso’s RBI single in the eighth broke a 1-1 tie as host Seattle defeated Detroit for the second straight night.

Pinch hitter Michael Saunders began the eighth with a double off the end of the bat down the left field line and was sacrificed to third by Chone Figgins. Duane Below relieved Luke Putkonen (0-1) and allowed Jaso’s line drive to left-center over a drawn-in infield.

Vargas (4-2) allowed one run, five hits and struck out six to snap a two-game losing streak as Seattle won for the fourth time in five games. Vargas set down 11 of the first 12 batters he faced.

Brandon League worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth to earn his eighth save in 10 chances.

Detroit rookie Drew Smyly allowed one run, two hits and struck out five in six innings to lower his ERA to 1.59. He retired the first eight hitters before issuing a walk to Figgins.

Kyle Seager gave Seattle a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when his two-out double to right drove home Ichiro Suzuki.

Detroit answered when Austin Jackson delivered a sacrifice fly to score Gerald Laird in the sixth.
