Royals 3, Tigers 2: Chris Getz drove in the winning run with an infield single in the ninth inning as visiting Kansas City salvaged a split of the rain-shortened two-game series.

Getz beat out a grounder to the hole at shortstop to plate Mike Moustakas, who doubled with one out off Joaquin Benoit (0-1).

Brennan Boesch had tied it in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run homer off Aaron Crow, taking Tigers ace Justin Verlander off the hook and preserving his streak of five straight wins over Kansas City.

Jonathan Sanchez pitched five scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, and Royals closer Jonathan Broxton worked around an infield single in the ninth for his fourth save in five chances. Tim Collins (1-0) earned the win.

Eric Hosmer doubled in a run and Alex Gordon had a pair of hits for Kansas City, which sent the Tigers to their ninth loss in 12 games.

Verlander worked in and out of trouble, allowing two runs on six hits in eight innings. He struck out seven and walked out.

The Royals took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat when Jarrod Dyson drew a leadoff walk and Hosmer snapped an 0-for-19 skid with a double to deep center.

Sanchez was perfect through 4 2/3 innings before surrendering Alex Avila's two-out double. He walked the next two batters to load the bases before retiring Austin Jackson to escaped unscathed. That ended his day despite throwing only 82 pitches.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Verlander is 14-2 in his career against Kansas City, his most wins against any opponent. ... Crow had made 10 consecutive scoreless appearances before serving up the homer to Boesch, who extended his hitting streak to nine game. ... Tigers OF Ryan Raburn was back in the lineup after missing two days with tightness in his hamstring. ... Gordon entered the game batting .143 (5-for-35) with 14 strikeouts in his career against Verlander. During his six-game hitting streak, he has raised his batting average from .167 to .244.
