Recap

Tigers 4, Royals 3: Prince Fielder drove in two runs, including the go-ahead run in the seventh, as Detroit won its fourth in a row.

Fielder’s single to center with two outs in the seventh off Jose Mijares (0-1) scored Miguel Cabrera to snap a 3-3 tie, sending the Royals to their sixth consecutive defeat.

Detroit, which leads the AL Central by 2 ½ games, trailed 3-1 in the fifth when Fielder’s double to right-center plated Cabrera, bringing the Tigers within 3-2.

In the seventh, Gerald Laird scored on Mijares’ wild pitch to tie the game. Cabrera moved to second on the play, and scored on Fielder’s base hit.

Detroit starter Max Scherzer (1-1) pitched into the seventh inning, giving up three runs on seven hits

Kansas City took a 2-1 lead on Alcides Escobar’s two-run homer in the third. The Royals pushed their lead to 3-1 in the fourth on Humberto Quintero’s double to left-center, scoring Billy Butler.

The Royals put two runners on in the eighth, but Jeff Francoeur grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his third save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Fielder finished 2-for-4, raising his average to .356. Cabrera also had two hits.… The benches cleared briefly in the seventh when Quintero and Detroit catcher Gerald Laird exchanged words after Quintero was hit by a pitch from Scherzer. No punches were thrown. … On his 26th birthday, Butler finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, extending his hitting streak to eight.
