Recap
Royals 6, Indians 3: Johnny Giavotella singled in the go-ahead run and scored in a two-hit day as visiting Kansas City took the rubber game from Cleveland.
Jeff Francoeur added two hits, an RBI and a run scored and Alex Gordon and Mike Moustakas each drove in a run and scored for the Royals, who overcame a 3-0 deficit.
Bruce Chen (4-5) allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings to pick up the win. The Indians loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth against Kansas City closer Jonathan Broxton, but Jose Lopez grounded into a game-ending double play to end the threat and give Broxton his 11th save.
Jeanmar Gomez (3-4) was handed a lead after the Indians put together a three-run rally in the second but the Royals immediately started chipping away. Moustakas doubled in Giovatella and Francoeur singled in a run to cut it to 3-2 in the third.
Kansas City capped the rally in the fourth, tying it when Gordon ripped an RBI double off the wall in left-center and taking the lead when Giovatella followed with a single.
Brayan Pena added an RBI single in the fifth, part of a three-hit day for the catcher - his second in the last five starts.
Gomez was replaced in the sixth by Scott Barnes, who loaded the bases on two walks and a hit-by-pitch but worked out of the jam without allowing a run in his major-league debut.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Indians placed DH Travis Hafner (knee) on the disabled list Wednesday morning. Hafner will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair fraying in his right meniscus on Thursday. … The Indians fell to 4-11 against left-handed starters. They are scheduled to face one lefty in a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins this weekend. … Kansas City has gone 18-14 since its 3-14 start and embarks on a six-game homestand starting with the Oakland Athletics on Friday.
