Indians 4, Rangers 2: Ubaldo Jimenez pitched seven scoreless innings to outduel Yu Darvish and Asdrubal Cabrera drove in a pair of runs as host Cleveland took the rubber game from Texas.
Jason Kipnis added a solo home run and Johnny Damon had a pair of hits for the Indians.
Jimenez (3-2), who had yielded eight earned runs while dropping back-to-back starts entering Sunday, retired 12 of the last 13 batters he faced and finished with six strikeouts. The right-hander walked the bases loaded in the third issued five free passes in the contest but surrendered only two hits.
The Rangers got two runs back against Tony Sipp in the eighth, but Chris Perez worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his 11th save.
Darvish (4-1) absorbed his first major-league loss. The Japanese star struck out 11 but allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits and four walks in six innings.
Cleveland got to Darvish in the third, when Cabrera followed a single and a walk with a two-run double to right. Darvish struck out the next two batters but Elvis Andrus made an error on Shin-Soo Choo’s two-out single, leading to a third run.
Kipnis’ fifth blast of the year leading off the fifth pushed it to 4-0.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Rangers have dropped four of their last five and fell to 2-6 on their current 10-game road trip. They begin a four-game set at Baltimore on Monday … Damon, who joined the Indians earlier in the week, is now 4-for-17 (.235) … The Indians host a doubleheader with the Chicago White Sox to open a four-game series Monday.
