Recap
Tigers 7, White Sox 4: Delmon Young ripped a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the seventh and host Detroit won its fifth straight against Chicago.
Young was 0-for-8 with the bases loaded this season before breaking a 4-all tie with his three-run double off Matt Thornton. The win pulled Detroit within two games of American League Central-leading Chicago, which was 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 12 runners on base.
Octavio Dotel (5-2) earned the win for the Tigers, who improved to 16-3 in their last 19 games against the White Sox at Comerica Park. Jose Valverde worked around a two-out walk in the ninth for his 27th save.
Miguel Cabrera gave Detroit an early lead with his two-run homer in the first off Jake Peavy (9-10), who allowed six runs over six innings.
Chicago catcher A.J. Pierzynski answered in the second with a leadoff homer to right field, snapping an 0-for-17 slump.
After Andy Dirks put Detroit up 3-1 with an RBI double in the bottom of the second, Chicago pulled closer in the third when Paul Konerko’s grounder scored Kevin Youkilis.
The White Sox tied the game in the fourth when Dewayne Wise was hit by a Doug Fister pitch with the bases loaded, but Fister avoided further damage by retiring the next three batters.
Jhonny Peralta led off the bottom of the fourth with his 11th home run, and Chicago tied it up again when Wise scored on Konerko’s sacrifice fly.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Tigers traded INF-OF Jeff Baker to the Atlanta Braves for a player to be named later. … The White Sox sent LHP Daniel Moskos outright to Triple-A Charlotte. … Fister gave up three runs (two earned) over five innings. … The Tigers lead the season series 8-4. … Cabrera went 3-for-4, and he’s 13-for-25 with four homers and seven RBIs in his last six games against Chicago.
