Recap

White Sox 4, Royals 2: Gordon Beckham drilled a tiebreaking eighth-inning homer and Chris Sale pitched eight strong innings as host Chicago edged Kansas City.

Beckham slammed a first-pitch breaking ball from Luis Mendoza (5-8) over the left field wall with one out in the eighth to snap a 2-2 tie as the White Sox won for the 10th time in 13 games.

Kevin Youkilis added a run-scoring double later in the eighth for a key insurance run as first-place Chicago maintained its 1 1/2-game lead over the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central.

Sale (13-3) allowed two runs and eight hits while winning for the 10th time in his last 11 decisions. He struck out seven and walked none.

The Royals put two runners on in the ninth before Addison Reed induced Eric Hosmer to ground into a game-ending double play for his 20th save in 23 opportunities.

A.J. Pierzynski delivered a run-scoring double in the second to give Chicago a 1-0 lead.

Jeff Francoeur homered in the fifth to tie the score and Kansas City went ahead on Billy Butler’s leadoff blast in the seventh.

Chicago’s Paul Konerko led off the bottom of the frame with a homer to tie the score at 2-2.

Sale pitched out of an eighth-inning jam after Kansas City had runners on first and third with none out. The key play of the frame was when Sale fielded a bunt by Alcides Escobar and tagged out Tony Abreu as he was charging home for the second out.

Mendoza allowed four runs and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings.
