White Sox 2, Royals 1: Adam Dunn belted his major-league leading 28th homer and Chris Sale won his 11th game as Chicago salvaged the final game of a weekend set in Kansas City.
Dunn connected in the top of the first inning, belting a 2-0 pitch from Kansas City starter Luis Mendoza (3-6) into the seats in right field. The homer pushed Dunn ahead of Toronto’s Jose Bautista and Texas’ Josh Hamilton for the big-league lead.
Sale (11-2), who has not lost since May 12 at Kansas City, allowed 10 hits and one run in eight innings. Sale walked nobody and struck out four. Addison Reed pitched the ninth for his 14th save as the White Sox won for the seventh time in nine games.
The White Sox pushed their lead to 2-0 in the second. Alexi Ramirez grounded into a double play, but Alex Rios scored.
Chris Getz singled to center in the fifth, driving home Mike Moustakas to bring Kansas City within 2-1.
Mendoza pitched well, surrendering two runs and four hits and in 7 1/3 innings, walking four and striking out six. Kansas City has lost seven of its past nine games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Both starters gave their bullpens a breather. Each team used nine pitchers in Friday’s series opener, and Kansas City relievers pitched four innings on Saturday. … Kansas City dropped to 15-25 at home. … The White Sox open a four-game series Monday at Boston.
