Recap
White Sox 3, Tigers 2: Adam Dunn’s two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning lifted visiting Chicago past Detroit.
After leading off the final frame with a single to center against Tigers closer Jose Valverde (2-1), Alejandro De Aza stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice. Dunn then drilled a 1-0 pitch into the right-field seats, giving the White Sox a victory for just the third time in their last 14 games at Comerica Park.
Hector Santiago put the winning run on second base with two out in the ninth before Addison Reed came on to strike out Austin Jackson and save the win for Nate Jones (1-0), who tossed a scoreless eighth.
Detroit starter Max Scherzer outdueled Gavin Floyd over the first seven innings, striking out nine without a walk and allowing just four hits. He carried a shutout into the seventh inning before allowing a solo home run to Paul Konerko. Joaquin Benoit struck out two in a perfect eighth inning before Valverde blew the save.
The Tigers jumped on top in the second inning behind RBI singles from Andy Dirks and Jackson, but Floyd avoided greater trouble by striking out Brennan Boesch to end the inning with two runners on.
Floyd allowed two runs on seven hits in his seven innings over his seven innings, striking out six.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Santiago's walk of Jhonny Peralta in the ninth was the lone base on balls allowed by either team ... Valverde has blown two saves this season after converting all 49 of his opportunities a year ago ... Dunn is tied for sixth in the majors with eight homers, one year after batting a record-low .159 with 11 round-trippers.
