Recap

Athletics 5, White Sox 4 (14): Yoenis Cespedes tied the game with a two-run homer and Kila Ka’aihue won it with a walk-off single in the 14th as host Oakland outlasted Chicago.

Paul Konerko had tied it 2-2 in the ninth inning with his 400th career home run and looked like he would get to celebrate a win along with the personal accomplishment on the plane ride home, when the White Sox took a 4-2 lead in the top of the 14th.

But the Athletics fought back in the bottom of the frame against Chicago closer Hector Santiago (0-1). Josh Reddick reached with a one-out single in front of Cespedes, who drove a 2-2 screwball deep into the left-center field seats to knot it 4-4.

Seth Smith and Kurt Suzuki followed with back-to-back singles in front of Ka’aihue, who dropped a single into left field.

The White Sox began their 14th-inning rally when Dayan Viciedo reached on an error by Athletics third baseman Eric Sogard. Viciedo moved up on a sacrifice and Alejandro De Aza reached with a two-out walk before Jim Miller (1-0) came on in relief of Jerry Blevins.

Ramirez drove an 0-1 pitch into the gap in left-center to plate a pair.

Grant Balfour blew the save in the ninth inning, surrendering a first-pitch home run to Konerko to knot it 2-2.

The White Sox had a chance to take the lead in the 13th but had a runner cut down at the plate.

Game Notebook:
The late-inning fireworks overshadowed a pitcher’s duel between a pair of young arms in Chicago left-hander Chris Sale and Oakland right-hander Jarrod Parker. Sale allowed two runs in eight innings while Parker surrendered one run in 6 1/3 frames. … Kosuke Fukudome was cut down on a botched squeeze bunt that would have tied it in the seventh. … Cespedes has 18 RBIs in 19 games.
