Recap

White Sox 4, Rangers 3: Alex Rios slugged a ninth-inning home run off Joe Nathan, giving Chicago a thrilling road win over the defending American League champions.

The win was the first in the major leagues for new White Sox manager Robin Ventura.

The game had been tied since the third inning when Rios led off the ninth by taking a 1-2 pitch over the center-field wall. Hector Santiago retired the Rangers in order in the bottom of the inning to save it for Matt Thornton (1-0), who worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning.

Paul Konerko drove in Chicago’s first three runs, one on a first-inning single and the other two on a third-inning double that gave the White Sox a brief 3-1 edge. Texas drew even in the bottom of the third when Elvis Andrus singled home a run and scored on a sacrifice fly by Adrian Beltre.

Ian Kinsler, Michael Young and David Murphy each finished with two hits for the Rangers, who lost despite outhitting the White Sox by a 10-5 margin.

Both starters departed after the sixth inning with the score tied at 3-3. Chicago’s Jake Peavy allowed eight hits and a walk while striking out five, and Holland finished with five strikeouts and three walks while yielding three hits.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Santiago’s save was the first of his major league career. ... The White Sox are now 8-1 in Peavy’s last nine road starts dating back to last season.
