Nationals 7, Pirates 4: Adam LaRoche went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs as Washington surged late to break open a pitchers’ duel against visiting Pittsburgh.

LaRoche and Xavier Nady hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against Erik Bedard (2-5) to give the Nationals a 4-1 lead. After Josh Harrison’s two-run homer in the top of the seventh brought the Pirates back within one, LaRoche answered with a three-run double off Evan Meek in the bottom of the frame.

Gio Gonzalez (5-1) got the win for Washington, striking out 10 batters in his seven innings of work. He allowed three runs on four hits and a pair of walks.

Ian Desmond also had a solo homer for the Nationals, a shot to left field in the third inning that gave the home side a 2-0 edge.

Bedard allowed four runs on six hits and a walk in six innings, striking out seven. Josh Harrison drove in another run for Pittsburgh on a fifth-inning single.
