Cubs 4, Nationals 3:
Chicago’s Jeff Samardzija gave the struggling Cubs a surprising boost, allowing four hits over 8 2/3 innings as the Cubs won a pitchers' duel at Wrigley Field in the series finale.

Alfonso Soriano drove in two runs for the Cubs, who won their first game of the season after their bullpen blew late leads in the first two games of the series with Washington.

Making his first major-league start since Sept. 26, 2010, and just the fifth start of his career, Samardzija (1-0) was spectacular. He finished with eight strikeouts and no walks, but Starlin Castro's throwing error with two outs in the ninth cost Samardzija a complete game.

Washington's Adam LaRoche followed with a two-run homer to right, ending Samardzija's day. Chicago closer Carlos Marmol, who blew the save in Saturday's loss, got the final out.

After a leadoff double by Ian Desmond, Samardzija retired the next 15 hitters in a row. Wilson Ramos snapped that streak with a single to right leading off the sixth. He would later score on Danny Espinosa’s sacrifice fly.

Washington’s Jordan Zimmermann (0-1) gave up just two runs (one earned) on six hits in seven solid innings. Zimmermann struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Chicago scored in the fourth. Castro singled to center and later scored on Soriano’s sacrifice fly. After the Nationals tied the game, Soriano’s single to left with two outs in the sixth plated Darwin Barney with the go-ahead run.

In the eighth, Castro doubled home David DeJesus to make it 3-1. Ian Stewart followed with a single to score Castro and push the advantage to 4-1.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Chicago first baseman Bryan LaHair, who missed a week with a back injury, started and went 2-for-4 with two doubles. … Samardzija had been 2-3 with a 7.77 ERA in five career starts, and had never pitched more than six innings in a start. … The Cubs host the Brewers in a three-game series starting Monday, while Washington heads to New York to face the unbeaten Mets.
