Recap

Phillies 3, Rockies 2:
John Mayberry Jr. hit a walkoff single with the bases loaded and host Philadelphia won the first game of a split doubleheader.

With Nate Schierholtz at second in the bottom of the ninth, the Rockies intentionally walked Chase Utley and Ryan Howard to load the bases and face Mayberry, whose soft liner to left field off Matt Belisle (3-6) popped out of the diving Carlos Gonzalez’s glove.

Jonathan Papelbon (5-6) notched the win for the Phillies, who recorded their 11th walkoff win this season and moved to six games behind St. Louis for the second wild-card spot in the National League after they won the nightcap of the doubleheader 7-4.

The Phillies won for the 14th time in their last 20 games and moved within three games of .500 for the first time since they were 31-34 on June 14.

The Rockies took an early lead in the second on RBI singles by DJ LeMahieu and Tyler Chatwood off Cole Hamels, who allowed two runs over seven innings.

Philadelphia answered in the third on Howard’s two-out, two-run double off Chatwood, giving him 29 RBI in his last 29 games at Citizens Bank Park.

Chatwood gave up two runs over five innings for Colorado, which lost its fourth straight game.

The Phillies threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with two outs against Rex Brothers before Ty Wigginton flied out to center field.
