Recap

Phillies 1, Pirates 0: Roy Halladay out-dueled Erik Bedard, pitching eight strong innings as visiting Philadelphia opened the season with a shutout victory.

Halladay (1-0) allowed back-to-back singles to Alex Presley and Jose Tabata leading off the first inning. The two-time Cy Young winner then got Andrew McCutchen to ground into a double play. A hit a batter in the fourth was the only baserunner the Pirates managed the rest of the way.

Halladay threw just 92 pitches before giving the ball to Jonathan Papelbon, who retired the final three hitters in order for his first National League save.

Philadelphia scored the only run in the seventh inning, when Ty Wigginton reached on a one-out single, moved to third on a John Mayberry Jr. double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Ruiz.

Despite the loss, Bedard (0-1) pitched well in his National League debut, scattering six hits and a walk over seven innings of work while striking out four.

Ruiz was 3-for-3 to lead the Phillies, who managed a total of eight hits.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
