Recap

Padres 3, Mets 1: Clayton Richard outdueled R.A. Dickey and Carlos Quentin scored the go-ahead run by knocking the ball away from catcher Josh Thole as host San Diego downed New York.

Quentin singled in the seventh inning for only the second hit off Dickey and sped toward home on Yonder Alonso’s double into the right-center field gap. The relay throw from Mets second baseman Ronny Cedeno was in time to retire Quentin but the outfielder took aim at Thole and used his left shoulder to knock the ball away from Thole to give the Padres a 2-1 lead.

John Baker followed with a run-scoring single to make it a two-run game as San Diego won for just the second time in eight outings.

Richard (8-11) allowed one run and eight hits in seven-plus innings. Luke Gregerson got two outs in the eighth and Huston Street recorded the final four outs for his 18th save in 18 opportunities.

Dickey (14-3) lost for the second time in three starts despite striking out nine and not allowing his first hit until Alonso singled with one out in the fifth. He gave up three runs (two earned) and four hits in seven innings.

New York took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when David Wright scored on Cedeno’s infield single. The Padres tied the game in the sixth when Everth Cabrera walked, was sacrificed to second, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Denorfia.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The four-out save was the third of the season for Street, who lowered his ERA to 0.84. … The Mets activated closer Frank Francisco (oblique) prior to the game and placed LHP Tim Byrdak (shoulder) on the disabled list. … Cabrera is 19-for-19 in steals but was picked off first by Dickey. … Wright fanned with two on and one out in the eighth against Gregerson, dropping to 1-for-6 with four strikeouts against the Padres' set-up man.
