Recap

Mets 3, Cubs 1:
Jordany Valdespin and Ike Davis homered and Dillon Gee pitched eight solid innings as host New York evened its series against Chicago.

Valdespin homered for the second straight game and gave the Mets an early lead with his solo shot in the second off Jeff Samardzija (6-8), who allowed three runs over seven innings.

Davis belted a two-run shot in the third in support of Gee (6-7), who gave up one run on seven hits with no walks. Bobby Parnell worked around Anthony Rizzo’s leadoff double in the ninth for his second save.

David DeJesus put Chicago on the board with an RBI single in the sixth, but the Cubs were unable to build on Friday’s 8-7 win in the series opener.

Gee, who matched a career high by tossing eight innings, has lasted at least five innings in each of his 17 starts this season.

Rizzo went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to eight games and he’s reached base safely in each of his first 11 games since his promotion from Triple-A.

New York improved to 7-3 over its last 10 games, while Chicago lost for only the fourth time in its last 12 contests.

GAME NOTEBOOK: David Wright went 1-for-3 to extend his home hitting streak to 15 games dating back to June 4. … The Cubs’ Ryan Dempster (lat) will be activated from the disabled list to start in Sunday’s series finale. … Mets CF Andres Torres (back) expects to return after the All-Star break. … Davis' 12th homer tied him with Lucas Duda and Scott Hairston for the team lead. … New York’s starting pitchers have pitched six or more innings in 19 of their last 21 games.
