Recap

Mets 6, Cardinals 1: Jonathon Niese became the latest Mets pitcher to shut down St. Louis as New York moved into a three-way tie with Washington and Miami atop the NL East.

Backed by Kirk Nieuwenhuis’ two-run homer and three RBIs, Niese (4-2) struck out a career-high 10 over six scoreless innings and also singled twice. The host Mets have outscored the Cards 19-1 in the series and go for a four-game sweep Monday.

New York won for the ninth time in 12 games to climb eight games over .500. St. Louis lost its season-high fifth straight to fall to .500.

Center fielder Andres Torres kept the Cardinals scoreless in the sixth by gunning out David Freese, who was trying to score from second on Adron Chambers’ hit. But Chambers finally got St. Louis on the board with an eighth-inning RBI single.

Jake Westbrook (4-5) remained winless in his last five starts, allowing five runs on nine hits in five innings.

Lucas Duda’s run-scoring single, his eighth RBI in the last four games, put New York ahead 1-0 in the first. Torres tripled in two runs in the sixth when his bouncer scooted down the first-base line into the corner.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
John Franco, the Mets' all-time leader with 276 saves, was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame before the game. … Cardinals CF Shane Robinson was scratched from the lineup due to migraines and replaced by Chambers. ... Freese snapped an 0-for-14 slump with an eighth-inning single … New York has won 18 of its last 25 regular-season home games against St. Louis.
