Mets 4, Nationals 3: Daniel Murphy made Henry Rodriguez pay for a critical error, driving in the winning run in the ninth as the host Mets improved to 4-0 with a victory over the Nationals.

After Mike Baxter drew a leadoff walk in the ninth, Ruben Tejada attempted to sacrifice him to second. But reliever Rodriguez (0-1), who fielded the ball cleanly, threw it past first baseman Adam LaRoche, enabling Baxter to advance to third.

Murphy then ripped a 1-0 pitch to right center as the Mets continued their hot start.

New York is 4-0 for the first time since 2007 and is one of only four remaining unbeaten teams.

Jon Rauch (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings to earn the win in his second appearance for the Mets, who he signed with after spending the previous year in Toronto.

The Nationals took a 1-0 lead in the first and stretched the advantage to 3-0 in the third on Ryan Zimmerman’s RBI double and LaRoche’s run-scoring single.

But the Mets got a run back in the bottom half on David Wright’s RBI single before Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a two-run homer to left an inning later to tie it at three.

Wright is batting .583 and has an RBI in each game for the Mets, who won despite an erratic outing from Mike Pelfrey, who gave up three runs on 10 hits and struck out eight in 5 ? innings.

Edwin Jackson allowed three runs on five hits in his debut for the Nationals, his seventh team in the last eight years.

Zimmerman and LaRoche each had multi-hit games for the Nationals, who out-hit the Mets 10-7 but left nine runners on base and finished 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Pelfrey’s eight strikeouts tied a career high … Nieuwenhuis’ home run was the first of his career … Citi Field was shortened in the offseason, and already the Mets have hit a pair of homers that wouldn’t have cleared the wall last year … The Nationals pulled off a four-game sweep of the Mets last September at Citi Field.
