Recap
Padres 8, Braves 2: Hot-hitting Chase Headley had a two-run single and Eric Stults pitched six strong innings as host San Diego won for the ninth time in 10 games.
Headley’s fifth-inning single off Tommy Hanson (12-7) raised his August RBI count to 30 as the Padres improved to 17-10 this month and handed Atlanta its eighth loss in 12 games.
Stults (5-2) gave up one unearned run and five hits while winning his fourth straight decision. He struck out five and walked two.
After Headley’s latest timely hit gave San Diego a 4-1 edge, the Padres put the game away with a four-run eighth. Chris Denorfia delivered a two-run, pinch-hit single and Yasmani Grandal and Yonder Alonso added run-scoring singles.
San Diego tallied twice in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead, with one run scoring on Logan Forsythe’s double off the base of the left-field fence and the other on an infield out by Cameron Maybin.
Forsythe’s throwing error set up Atlanta’s fifth-inning run, which crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Michael Bourn.
David Ross homered in the ninth for the Braves’ other run.
Chipper Jones went 2-for-4 and hit a ground single to center in the eighth in the final at-bat of his career in San Diego.
Hanson allowed four runs (three earned) and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. It was his first loss to San Diego in five career decisions.
GAME NOTEBOOK: San Diego OF Will Venable had two hits and is batting .471 (16-for-34) over his last nine games. … Jones batted .319 in 31 career games at Petco Park, with seven homers and 20 RBIs. … The Padres expect to get closer Huston Street (calf) back from the disabled list during a weekend series against the Colorado Rockies. Street is slated to throw a rehab outing at Single-A Lake Elsinore on Friday before joining the club. … Martin Prado played first base in the series finale, marking the fifth different position he has started at during Atlanta’s 10-game road trip.
