Rangers 2, Blue Jays 1: Nelson Cruz blasted a two-run homer and six Texas pitchers kept Toronto at bay in a narrow victory over the host Blue Jays.

Cruz's 19th home run of the season propelled the Rangers to just their second win in the last six games. Michael Kirkman (1-2) earned the victory in relief while Joe Nathan retired the side in order in the ninth for his 24th save.

Carlos Villanueva (6-3) was the hard-luck loser, charged with two runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. He has allowed three runs or fewer in seven of eight starts since being inserted into the rotation.

The Blue Jays used small ball to open the scoring in the third inning. Anthony Gose drew a one-out walk, stole second base, advanced to third on Roy Oswalt's balk and came around to score on Adeiny Hechavarria's single up the middle through a drawn-in infield. The RBI was the first of Hechavarria's career.

Texas jumped in front on a bizarre sequence in the fifth. Adrian Beltre hit a fly ball to deep center field that Gose lost in the sun, allowing it to bounce off the turf and over the fence for a ground-rule double.

Cruz came up next and drilled a Villanueva offering over the fence in left-center.

Oswalt, starting in place of Ryan Dempster (personal), was curiously removed from the game with two outs in the fifth after throwing just 61 pitches. He limited Toronto to a run on two hits while striking out five.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista (wrist) is expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment early next week. If all goes well, the injured slugger - who hasn't played in over a month - may return to the lineup Friday in Baltimore. ... Dempster was unavailable after reportedly losing his passport. The Rangers wouldn't confirm the report, saying only that Dempster would return to the team Monday. He hasn't pitched in his native Canada since 2004. ... Oswalt has allowed just one run on four hits in 13 2/3 career innings against the Blue Jays. ... Toronto SS Yunel Escobar was ejected in the top of the eighth inning after engaging in a shouting match with home plate umpire Jeff Nelson.
