Recap

Athletics 4, Blue Jays 1: Bartolo Colon tossed eight scoreless innings and Josh Reddick hit a two-run homer to power host Oakland past slumping Toronto in the opener of a four-game series.

Colon (8-8) won his second straight start, allowing seven hits and stretching his scoreless streak to 16 1/3 innings, as the Athletics moved a half-game in front of the Los Angeles Angeles for the American League wild card lead.

Reddick, who entered the game mired in a career-worst 0-for-21 slump, capped a three-run third inning with his 23rd homer to send the Blue Jays to their season high-tying fifth straight loss.

Seth Smith and Brandon Inge added RBI singles for Oakland, which halted a modest two-game losing streak and moved within 4 1/2 games of Texas in the AL West.

Right-hander Henderson Alvarez (7-8) allowed three runs on four hits in five-plus innings for Toronto, which has managed only eight runs during its five-game skid and dropped six games behind Oakland in the wild card chase.

Colby Rasmus, Edwin Encarnacion and Yunel Escobar had two hits apiece for the Blue Jays, who had the tying run at the plate in the ninth before Ryan Cook retired Rasmus for his 11th save.
