Recap

Athletics 4, Rays 2: Chris Carter belted a two-run homer and Brandon McCarthy pitched seven strong innings to win for the first time in more than two months as visiting Oakland captured the rubber game of the series.

McCarthy (7-5), making his fourth start since coming off the disabled list, allowed two runs on four hits to earn his first win since June 19. He struck out seven and retired 18 of the final 20 batters he faced.

Carter's 10th homer capped a three-run first inning against Jeremy Hellickson and helped propel the Athletics to their eighth win in 10 games and pull them within a half-game of American League wild card leader Tampa Bay.

Seth Smith hit a solo homer and Coco Crisp and Josh Reddick had three hits apiece as Oakland moved 12 games over .500 for the first time since 2006.

Sean Doolittle struck out two in a scoreless eighth and closer Grant Balfour secured his 14th save with a perfect ninth as the Athletics handed the Rays only their second series loss this month.

Hellickson (8-9) staggered through a three-run, 41-pitch first inning and was gone after yielding four runs in six hits in five innings.

Desmond Jennings homered for Tampa Bay, which lost for only the seventh time in the last 23 games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Rays loaded the bases with no outs in the second but managed only a sacrifice fly by C Jose Lobaton. ... McCarthy avoided losing three straight starts for the first time in his career. ... Reddick responded with three hits after being dropped to No. 6 in the batting order. He sat out Friday's game after batting .149 (14-for-94) in his previous 22 games. ... Jennings' homer matched his total from last year and ended an 0-for-14 skid at the plate. ... Carter's first-inning blast snapped a 14-game homerless drought. ... Both teams will have a rare Sunday off due to the unavailability of Tropicana Field, which will be used for the upcoming Republican National Convention. Oakland will head to Cleveland for a four-game series beginning Monday while the Rays head to Texas for a three-game set.
