Rays 5, Royals 3: James Shields pitched 7 2/3 solid innings for his fourth straight victory and host Tampa Bay won the rubber game of its series with Kansas City.

Jose Lobaton clubbed a solo home run and Jeff Keppinger had two hits and an RBI as the Rays won for the sixth time in seven games to remain atop the American League wild card standings.

Shields (12-7) struck out seven and was charged with three runs on five hits. He exited after yielding a two-out RBI triple to Alcides Escobar.

Kyle Farnsworth got the final out in the eighth after Jake McGee surrendered an RBI single to Alex Gordon. Fernando Rodney earned his major league-leading 39th save to help the Rays improve to 15-5 in August.

Luis Mendoza (7-9) lasted only 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking four. He failed to strike out a batter as Kansas City lost for only the fifth time in 15 games.

Ryan Roberts and Ben Zobrist also drove in runs for Tampa Bay, which moved within three games of New York atop the AL East. The Yankees dropped a 2-1 decision to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night.

Jeff Francoeur added an RBI single for the Royals, who were seeking their third straight series win.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Royals manager Ned Yost was ejected in the top of the eighth inning for arguing balls and strikes. ... Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria was back at designated hitter Wednesday. He played his first game in the field Tuesday since tearing his hamstring on April 30. ... Mendoza made his 34th career start and it was the first one played indoors. He failed to record a strikeout for the first time since a relief appearance at Cleveland on May 28, 2011. ... The Rays' 1-0 loss Tuesday was their third by that score in August. They are the first team to endure three 1-0 defeats in one month since the Los Angeles Angels in September 2004. ... Tampa Bay hosts the Oakland Athletics for a three-game series beginning Thursday, while the Royals have a day off before beginning a four-game series at Boston on Friday.
