Recap

Rays 5, Braves 2: Matt Joyce hit a grand slam and Alex Cobb limited Atlanta to two runs over seven innings as Tampa Bay evened the three-game series at Tropicana Field.

Joyce connected off Braves starter Randall Delgado in the third inning, giving Cobb all the support he needed. Cobb (1-0), promoted from Triple-A after Jeff Niemann fractured a bone in his right leg this week, scattered six hits while walking two and striking out six.

Delgado (2-4) struggled with his command, walking five while striking out two in four innings. He allowed three hits and four runs.

The Braves jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Juan Francisco’s single to center scored Brian McCann and Eric Hinske drove in Jason Heyward with a sacrifice fly.

Delgado could not hold the lead. Following a pair of walks sandwiched around a Chris Gimenez single, Joyce hit a 2-0 pitch from Delgado over the fence in center field for his third career grand slam.

Tampa Bay added a run in the sixth on Sean Rodriguez’s homer off Cristhian Martinez.

Rays pitchers retired the final 16 Atlanta hitters, holding the Braves to six hits. Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his 13th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Atlanta’s Martin Prado went 0-for-3, ending his hitting streak at 10 games. … Upton stole two bases for the second consecutive game. … Tampa Bay improved to 15-5 at home while Atlanta dropped to 15-9 on the road.
