Tampa Bay’s James Shields (4-0) allowed 11 hits and four runs in six innings.

Longoria’s three-run blast off Matt Harrison (3-1) highlighted a four-run first inning. Longoria added a run-scoring single in the fourth, prior to Tampa Bay’s lead reaching 7-1 on a run-scoring double by Ben Zobrist.

Hamilton hit a two-run homer in the fifth for Texas.

Scott homered in the top of the sixth to make it 8-3 and David Murphy of Texas answered with a homer in the bottom of the inning.

The Rangers loaded the bases in the eighth before Wade Davis retired Elvis Andrus on a hard-hit, inning-ending liner to center. The at-bat lasted 11 pitches and Andrus narrowly missed a game-tying grand slam homer on the 10th pitch as the ball landed about 10 feet to the right of the right-field foul pole.

Jake McGee struck out two in a perfect ninth in a non-save situation.

Harrison allowed seven runs (six earned) and 14 runs in five innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Shields has won four straight starts since taking a no-decision in his first outing. … Andrus had three hits. … Davis wasn’t allowed a run in six of seven relief appearances after being a starter the previous two years. … Hamilton and Texas catcher Mike Napoli each struck out three times.
