Yankees 3, Indians 1: Nick Swisher homered and drove in three runs and CC Sabathia tossed 7 1/3 solid innings after being activated from the disabled list as visiting New York handed struggling Cleveland its ninth consecutive defeat.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the seventh inning, Derek Jeter singled and advanced to second on shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera's throwing error. Swisher then deposited a fastball from Cody Allen (0-1) over the wall in right-center field for his 19th homer this season - and 100th as a member of the Yankees.
Tempers flared in the second inning after Jeter was hit on the left side of his helmet by a pitch from rookie starter Corey Kluber. Jeter looked visibly upset as he stomped off to first base.
Sabathia (13-3) attempted to answer in the fourth inning by throwing behind Cabrera. Cabrera then responded by belting his 14th homer of the season to straight-away center field.
That was the lone mistake by Sabathia, who recorded his sixth straight victory. The hefty lefty showed no ill effects from a sore pitching elbow after striking out nine on exactly 100 pitches to improve to 3-1 versus his former team.
David Robertson finished the eighth inning before Rafael Soriano worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth for his 32nd save as New York snapped a three-game losing skid.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cleveland has mustered just 25 runs during its losing skid - including six in its last five games. The Indians have dropped 22 of their last 26 contests. ... Prior to Swisher's homer, left-handed batters were 0-for-21 versus Allen. Swisher finished a triple shy of the cycle. ... Making his fifth start of his career, Kluber permitted one run on six hits in five innings.
