Yankees 6, Angels 5: Mark Teixeira's second home run of the night was a three-run blast to tie the game in the eighth, and light-hitting Russell Martin plated the winning run with an RBI single later in the inning as New York rallied to beat visiting Los Angeles.
The Yankees were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position until the eighth, when they rallied against left-hander Scott Downs. Derek Jeter's leadoff double and a walk to Curtis Granderson set the table for Teixeira, who also hit a two-run shot in the third.
Martin, hitting just .177, sliced a single down the right-field line off reliever Kevin Jepsen to score pinch runner Dewayne Wise.
Downs (1-1), who had allowed just one earned run in 30 innings this season, was charged with all four runs in the inning.
Mark Trumbo gave Los Angeles the lead with his 23rd home run of the season, a three-run blast over the visitors' bullpen in left-center field in the seventh. The Angels made it 5-2 on Albert Pujols' ground-rule double in the eighth.
Angels starter C.J. Wilson allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts and was in line to beat the Yankees for the second time this season before Teixeira's second homer. Wilson hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in his last 12 outings.
Hiroki Kuroda allowed five runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out six. Chad Qualls (1-0) recorded the final two outs in the eighth for the win, and Rafael Soriano worked around a one-out single in the ninth for his 21st save.
Erick Aybar opened the scoring with a solo homer - his third - for the Angels in the third inning.
