Yankees 4, White Sox 2: Eric Chavez and Robinson Cano homered and Phil Hughes pitched eight strong innings to lead host New York past Chicago.
Hughes (9-6) struck out eight and allowed two runs and six hits for his eighth win in 10 decisions as the Yankees salvaged a four-game split with the White Sox.
Rafael Soriano worked the ninth for his 18th save in 19 opportunities. Dayan Viciedo walked with two outs before Soriano struck out Alexei Ramirez to end it.
Chavez and Cano each hit two-run blasts against Chicago starter Gavin Floyd (6-8).
After the White Sox struck for two first-inning runs on singles by Kevin Youkilis and Alex Rios, the Yankees tied the score in the second on Chavez’s homer and went ahead on Cano’s shot in the third.
Hughes settled down after allowing the two first-inning runs. He walked one and has issued just 22 bases on balls in 16 starts.
Floyd gave up four runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked five and struck out three.
GAME NOTEBOOK: New York has three starters on the American League All-Star team in second baseman Cano, shortstop Derek Jeter and outfielder Curtis Granderson. Injured pitcher CC Sabathia also was selected but will be replaced on the roster. … Chicago has three players on the AL team in first baseman Paul Konerko, outfielder/designated hitter Adam Dunn and pitcher Chris Sale. Starter Jake Peavy is one of five candidates on the AL Final Vote ballot. … Cano has nine homers and 16 RBIs over his last 14 games. … Rios went 2-for-4 and has seven multihit games over his last nine contests.
