Recap

Yankees 3, Royals 2: Robinson Cano homered and Phil Hughes pitched six strong innings as host New York snapped a three-game losing streak.

Hughes (4-5) tied a season high with seven strikeouts and allowed two runs on five hits as the Yankees evened the season series with Kansas City at three games apiece.

Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth for his third save, stranding the tying run at third base by retiring Alcides Escobar to end it.

Derek Jeter had an RBI single in a two-run sixth inning for New York, which won for only the second time in eight games.

Royals starter Luke Hochevar (3-5) allowed three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out a season-high eight and walked three.

Humberto Quintero's RBI double in the third and Jeff Francoeur's homer in the fourth gave Kansas City an early 2-0 lead, but Cano's solo blast in the bottom of the inning cut the deficit in half.

The Yankees went ahead in the fifth, loading the bases with no outs before Jeter looped a single to right, ending a 15-game RBI drought. A groundout by Curtis Granderson plated the go-ahead run.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Jeter's fifth-inning single broke an 0-for-12 slump by the Yankees with the bases loaded. New York's last hit with the bases full was a grand slam by Cano against Hochevar on May 6. Cano has three homers and nine RBIs in 12 at-bats against Hochevar. ... Royals 2B Irving Falu extended his hitting streak to nine games. He started for Chris Getz, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a bruised left ribcage and strained cartilage, the result of a slide into second base Monday night. Kansas City called up left-hander Will Smith from Triple-A Omaha. ... Wise's bunt in the fifth was his first hit since May 6. It also snapped an 0-for-14 string for the Yankees with runners in scoring position.
