Recap

Royals 4, Yankees 3: Mike Moustakas homered and drove in three runs as Kansas City won its first home game after 10 straight losses.

Moustakas hit a solo home run in the second inning and had a two-run single in the fifth in support of Danny Duffy (2-2), who gave up two runs over 5 1/3 innings.

Mark Teixeira tied the game at one with his RBI double in the third, but Kansas City answered in the bottom half of the inning with Eric Hosmer’s run-scoring single off David Phelps (0-1), who allowed two runs over four innings in his first major league start.

Jonathan Broxton retired Alex Rodriguez with a runner at third in the ninth inning for his fifth save and second in as many games for Kansas City, which went 0-10 during its season-opening homestand.

The Yankees out-hit the Royals 13-9, but they were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.

Derek Jeter went 4-for-5 and became the second player in Yankees history with 500 career doubles.

Prior to the game, Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was carted off the field after injuring his right knee during batting practice. He was diagnosed with a torn knee ligament and will miss the rest of the season, ending his major league record streak of 15 straight seasons with 20-plus saves.
