Recap
Angels 7, Yankees 1: Howard Kendrick went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and C.J. Wilson pitched six solid innings as visiting Los Angeles snapped a three-game losing streak and took the second game of its three-game set with New York.
The Angels, a day after losing 5-0, picked up their third win of the season, getting solid efforts from their big off-season additions.
Albert Pujols, who signed a 10-year, $240-million free-agent contract, went 2-for-5 and hit an RBI double to the wall in center field in the third inning. Pujols entered the weekend hitting only .222 (6-for-27).
Wilson (2-0) continued to make good on his five-year, $77.5-million deal, allowing one run on six hits and striking out two for his first career victory over New York.
Kendrick put the Los Angeles ahead 6-0 when he launched a 1-2 slider deep into the left-field seats for a three-run home run in the fourth inning.
Chris Iannetta, another off-season acquisition, squeaked a two-run homer over the right-field fence in the top of the second inning. Vernon Wells got in on the home run parade with a solo blast to left field in the fifth.
Phil Hughes (0-1) survived only 3 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits – two home runs - while striking out seven batters. He was relieved by David Phelps, who gave up only a solo home run and sat down four in 5 1/3 innings.
Robinson Cano got the Yankees on the board in the fifth with his first RBI of the season.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Derek Jeter picked up career hit No. 3,100 on an infield single in the first. … Wells’ home run was the 250th of his career. … Pujols has gone 32 at-bats without a home run, his longest drought to start a season.
