Rays 7, Yankees 6:
Carlos Pena hit a grand slam in the first inning and a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to complete a triumphant return to Tampa Bay. The host Rays got to Mariano Rivera in the ninth and got an early leg-up in the American League East race.

Rivera (0-1) came in looking for his 604th career save but gave up a lead-off single to Desmond Jennings. Ben Zobrist was up next and wasted no time tying the game, driving the first pitch to right-center for an RBI triple.

The Yankees elected to walk the next two batters intentionally to set up a force at the plate. Rivera struck out Sean Rodriguez for the first out, but Pena drove a 1-2 cutter to the wall in left-center to plate the winning run.

Fernando Rodney (1-0) got the win as six Rays relievers combined to toss four hitless innings.

C.C. Sabathia started for the Yankees and struggled with his fastball command. He ended up loading the bases in the first inning on a walk, a hit and an intentional pass. That came back to haunt him immediately, as Pena took a 3-2 fastball and blasted it over the right-center field wall for a grand slam.

James Shields wasn't any better in the beginning for the Rays and New York bounced right back.

The Yankees halved the deficit in the second and took control in the third. Raul Ibanez gave them a 6-4 lead when he blasted a three-run homer deep to right. Ibanez finished with four RBIs.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Pena, who is back with the Rays after a one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs last season, got a standing ovation from the fans prior to his first at-bat. … David Robertson got the Yankees out of a jam in the eighth, when he struck out the side with runners at the corners. … Tampa Bay took 10 of 18 in the series last season.
