Recap

Yankees 10, Red Sox 2:
Robinson Cano homered and doubled during a nine-run uprising in the second inning as host New York crushed Boston and moved back into sole possession of first place in the American League East.

Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira and Russell Martin also homered during the second inning flurry for the Yankees, who pulled one game ahead of Baltimore. The Orioles lost at Tampa Bay 5-3 earlier Monday.

CC Sabathia (15-6), who would be in line to start a playoff opener Saturday if New York wins the division, dominated through eight innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking one.

Cano led off the second and drove the first pitch deep to the batter’s eye in straightaway center. Granderson came up two hitters later and sent a two-run shot - his 41st - into the second deck down the right field line, and Martin made it back-to-back blasts when his liner into the first row in right was upheld after replay.

Clay Buchholz (11-8) would surrender a sacrifice fly to Alex Rodriguez and a two-run double to Cano before being lifted. Alfredo Aceves came on and served up a two-run shot to Teixeira to cap the frame.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Daniel Nava hit a solo home run and Jarrod Saltalamachia added a sacrifice fly for the Red Sox, who had only two players in the lineup that were on the roster opening day - Saltalamacchia and Cody Ross. … Buchholz was charged with eight runs in 1 2/3 innings to become the only pitcher in Boston history to surrender eight runs in fewer than two innings against the Yankees. … Cano finished 3-for-5 and has multiple hits in seven straight games.
