Red Sox 5, Mariners 0: Josh Beckett celebrated his 32nd birthday by striking out a season-high nine over seven solid innings and Mike Aviles had a pair of RBI doubles as host Boston recorded its fifth straight victory.
After being booed off the field in his last outing, Beckett (3-4) received a far friendlier response from the Fenway faithful Tuesday. The right-hander fanned six of the first nine batters he faced en route to a brilliant four-hit performance.
David Ortiz provided the first jolt in the third inning after he deposited a 3-2 fastball from Blake Beavan (1-4) into the bullpen in right field for his eighth homer.
Aviles doubled the advantage in the next inning after he took Beavan's slider and launched it to right field. His first RBI double plated Cody Ross and he added another in the eighth to cap to scoring.
Rich Hill retired the side in order in the eighth inning and Alfredo Aceves worked the ninth in a non-save situation.
Dustin Ackley extended his hitting streak to 11 games with an infield single for the Mariners, who have dropped 10 of their last 11 road contests.
Beavan yielded three runs on five hits in four innings to 0-3 in his career versus the Red Sox.
Former Boston hurler Tim Wakefield tossed out the ceremonial pitch prior to the game. Wakefield was honored after announcing his retirement prior to the season. Former catcher Doug Mirabelli was also on hand and caught the first pitch. ... The Red Sox sent left-hander Hunter Cervenka to the Chicago Cubs to complete last month's trade for Marlon Byrd. Cervenka posted an 0-3 mark with an 8.04 ERA in nine appearances with Class-A Greenville. ... Boston will visit American League East rival Tampa Bay on Wednesday to start an abbreviated two-game series, while Seattle will hit the road to face Cleveland.
