Recap

Royals 4, Red Sox 3: Bruce Chen pitched 6 2/3 solid innings and host Kansas City took advantage of shaky defense to hand Boston its seventh loss in eight games.

The Royals scored three unearned runs in the first inning and Alcides Escobar delivered a one-out RBI double in the fourth.

Chen (1-4) allowed three runs, seven hits and struck out five. His only mistake came with two outs in the third, when he yielded a three-run double to Adrian Gonzalez on a 3-2 fastball down the middle.

Aaron Crow pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Jonathan Broxton allowed a single and walk to lead off the ninth before earning his seventh save in eight chances.

After Marlon Byrd sacrificed the runners to second and third with one out, left fielder Alex Gordon made a sliding catch of Ryan Sweeney’s tailing line drive and held Darnell McDonald at third. Broxton retired former Royal Mike Aviles on a grounder to short to end it.

Jon Lester (1-3) left after throwing 108 pitches in five innings and allowing four runs (one earned) and six hits.

Lester looked to be out of the first inning unscathed, but center fielder Byrd couldn’t handle a line drive hit right at him by Johnny Giavotella that scored Billy Butler with two outs. Brayan Pena followed with a two-run double.

Cody Ross appeared to make the catch on Pena’s drive in the left-center field gap, but didn’t hold on long enough before juggling it off the wall and regaining possession.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Red Sox mourned the death of Fenway Park public address announcer Carl Beane, 59, who was killed in a one-car crash in Massachusetts on Wednesday. … Kansas City took 2 of 3 from Boston to improve to 4-13 at home. … Lester fell to 5-2 lifetime against Kansas City. … The Royals pinned a loss on a left-hander for the first time in six games this season (1-4).
