Recap

Blue Jays 3, Red Sox 1: Ricky Romero allowed three hits in 8 1/3 innings and retired 17 straight batters at one point as host Toronto took two of three from Boston.

Romero (1-0), who struck out four, walked Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia to lead off the ninth inning after not allowing a baserunner since the third.

After Adrian Gonzalez' deep fly out to center field advanced both runners, Romero was replaced by Sergio Santos. The Blue Jays closer struck out Kevin Youkilis and got David Ortiz on a grounder to earn his first save in three chances.

Yunel Escobar drove in two runs and Rajai Davis tripled and scored a pair for the Blue Jays.

Jon Lester (0-1) allowed three runs, three hits, two walks and struck out six in eight innings. The left-hander retired 15 straight batters spanning the third and eighth.

Lester, who had won six of his last seven decisions in Toronto, fell to 10-5 lifetime against the Blue Jays.

Both pitchers retired their first six batters before the bats came alive in the third.

Ellsbury lined a single to left field to drive in Mike Aviles and give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.

Toronto answered when Davis tripled down the right-field line to knock in Eric Thames and scored on Escobar's sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.

The Blue Jays added an insurance run in the eighth when Escobar singled home Davis, who stayed alive after he was picked off first by Lester but beat the throw from Gonzalez to second.
